Impressive city participation at Senate Transportation Forums

New AWC president and mayor of Dayton, Craig George, spoke on behalf of cities at the Senate Transportation Forum in Spokane Valley on Wednesday, October 2. He was featured in this article in the Spokesman Review, emphasizing city priorities such as a city share of gas tax increase and local revenue options.

The Spokane Valley forum was the sixth out of 10 transportation forums organized by the Senate Transportation Committee. By far, most participants have discussed specific projects that are important to local economies or improve freight mobility or safety in their communities. Other topics frequently mentioned by cities have been growing city street maintenance needs and the need for a significant local share of any gas tax increase, local transportation revenue options, support for state grant programs like the Transportation Improvement Board, bike and pedestrian considerations, and transit. Many city officials have also discussed reform ideas proposed by the Senate Majority Coalition Caucus. Cities have been effective in sharing how investments in transportation infrastructure would help local communities.

There are four more forums and we hope to continue to see a strong city presence. Click here for the schedule and additional resources.
