Bill authorizes therapeutic courts

ESHB 2556 passed the House and now heads to the Senate for a public hearing February 26 at 6:30pm in the House Law & Justice Committee. This bill authorizes all trial courts to establish therapeutic courts. Therapeutic courts are specialty courts like veteran’s courts and drug courts. These alternative courts commonly require intense, judicially supervised treatment with the goal of reducing recidivism. Participation is voluntary and only open to specific cases that meet the criteria. Such courts can be very effective, but require specific resources to ensure success. Currently, municipal courts are only authorized to operate therapeutic DUI courts.
