SEPA requirements for cultural resources

Last week we updated you on a bill from Rep. John McCoy (HB 1809) that rolls back some of the gains of our SEPA reform bill from last year. Despite the opposition of AWC, the counties, and the Association of Washington Business, the bill advanced out of committee on a 7-1 vote.

We agree and sympathize with the intent of the bill to ensure that appropriate notice is provided to tribes, and anyone else, who wants information about projects in our communities. The rulemaking process established last year, and happening now, requires the Department of Ecology to ensure that this notice is maintained, and even strengthened, as SEPA rules are amended. We think that process is still the best path forward on this issue.
