Proposal to tax state medical pot sales

Reps. Hunter (D-Medina) and Carlyle (D-Seattle) introduced HB 1789, which would issue a 25% tax on marijuana products sold at medical marijuana dispensaries. Their purpose is to even the field between medical and retail marijuana. If state-licensed retail stores will be taxed, they feel the medical stores should be as well.

It is not clear how this would impact medical marijuana collective gardens, because the bill specifically references dispensaries which do not technically exist. The discussion will continue on this issue, as some question whether medical dispensaries will be needed after the legalization and licensing of stores takes effect. HB 1789 does not yet have a hearing but AWC is closely monitoring the progress.
