Electronic signatures bill passes Legislature

A bill authorizing local governments to use electronic signatures has passed the Legislature. It was amended by the Senate, and the House will need to concur with the amendment before it moves to the Governor for signature.

Under HB 2427, sponsored by Rep. Larry Springer (D-Kirkland), whenever the use of a written signature is authorized or required, an electronic signature may be used with the same force and effect as the use of a signature affixed by hand. As technology has changed and many day-to-day interactions in government take place electronically, this becomes an important tool for cities.

Currently, there are differing opinions over whether cities have this authority. AWC is supportive of this legislation.
