Giving fire department employees rights to volunteer or obtain part-time employment

SB 6250 would give fire department employees the right to volunteer or obtain employment with other fire departments. The proposal authorizes employees of municipal fire departments and fire protection districts to volunteer for, or obtain part-time or on-call employment with other fire departments so long as it does not conflict with the employee's performance. Collective bargaining agreements cannot prohibit employees from exercising this right.

AWC has some concerns about the potential impacts of this proposal, including possible complications with the scheduling and benefits of fire department employees. The bill will be heard by the Senate Commerce & Labor Committee on Monday, January 18 at 1:30 pm.
