AWC State of the Cities

State of the Cities

The State of the Cities is an ongoing research effort by the Association of Washington Cities to explore the fiscal health and trends of Washington’s cities and towns. A comprehensive State of the Cities report is released every four years at the beginning of each gubernatorial term. Interim reports, which present an in-depth look at a specific topic, are released annually between full reports.

This report examines the condition of city infrastructure systems, financing challenges and provides recommendations for city and state action. Interim Report

Strong Cities, Strong State:
Economic Development in Washington’s Cities and Towns, 2007
Many of Washington’s cities and towns are turning to economic development as a way to surmount budget difficulties and increase the quality of life for their residents. Just as all cities and towns are unique, each entity approaches economic development differently. This report explores what cities are doing to promote economic development, the successes they’ve had, and the barriers they are experiencing. Interim Report

Forming Successful Partnerships:
A Practical Guide for Local Government, 2006
The 2005 State of the Cities report found that as city resources are increasingly stretched, cities and others are finding creative ways to form partnerships to offer more effective, productive and efficient services. This resource lays a roadmap for forming potential partnerships, along with examples of existing successful partnerships in Washington State. Interim Report

State of the Cities:
Assessing the Health of Washington’s Cities and Towns, 2005
This report demonstrates that while cities and towns are working creatively to keep pace with growing needs, many communities are falling behind on basic infrastructure, transportation improvements and the ability to provide economic opportunities for a growing population. The document served as a starting point for discussion with the state and other partners in providing services to Washington’s citizens. Comprehensive Report
