How Elected Officials Can Use Social Media and Comply with the Law

Co-sponsored by AWC and the cities of Lakewood and Everett

View webinar

Social media has taken communication to a whole new level. Communications outlets such as Twitter, Facebook and blogs are rapidly changing the ways we work and connect. The lines between personal and work lives are blurring, and in some ways, being erased. How elected officials should use these tools to support city work still is emerging.

You’ll explore the possibilities and pitfalls of using social media. You will hear tips for navigating the Public Records Act, the Open Public Meetings Act, document retention laws and other legal requirements.

This is a great opportunity for elected officials and city attorneys to learn about the issues relating to the use of social media and get their questions answered.

Presenters:

  • Walter Neary, Lakewood City Councilmember
  • Ramsey Ramerman, Everett Assistant City Attorney
