State Auditor’s Office makes changes to small city program

As many officials from small cities are aware, the small city specialist position with the State Auditor’s Office was cut to half-time in July 2010. AWC recently learned that Toni Nelson, the Small City Specialist, has resigned from the State Auditor’s Office to take a position with a private company that will provide training to new personnel and elected officials in the areas of compliance and government accounting. More information can be found in the summer Audit Connection. The State Auditor’s Office will continue to accept and answer questions through their Help Desk at www.sao.wa.gov.

Prior to Toni’s departure, AWC worked with the State Auditor’s Office with the hope of finding some way for this program to continue. We know many officials from small cities throughout the state also contacted the Auditor’s Office to emphasize the importance of this program and to express support for its continuation.

AWC will continue to explore ways these critical services can be provided to small cities. If you have any questions, please contact Karen Tanner, Leadership Programs Coordinator, at karent@awcnet.org.
