Nominating Committee Process

The 2008 Nominating Committee met on Friday, May 2 and selected a chair person and secretary. The committee reviewed Board application forms submitted by potential candidates for officer and director positions on the AWC Board of Directors.

The Nominating Committee will meet again on Tuesday, June 17 during the AWC annual conference in Yakima to interview potential candidates and formulate the final list of nominated candidates. The final list will be submitted to voting delegates during the AWC annual business meeting on Friday, June 20. Candidates should be available to be interviewed on Tuesday, June 17*.  After the candidate filing deadline, AWC staff will inform all candidates of their individual interview date and time.

*Subsequent meetings may be necessary depending upon the number of candidates to be interviewed.

The Nominating Committee encourages applications from other elected officials who would like to serve on the AWC Board. To allow the Nominating Committee ample time to review all applicants, candidates should submit their Board Application no later than 5 pm, June 2. Individuals applying after this deadline will have to run for an AWC officer or Board position directly from the floor during the Friday business meeting.

The AWC Nominating Committee will produce and distribute a summary of the candidates for the Board of Directors, similar to a "voter's pamphlet." The pamphlet will be distributed to the voting delegates at the Annual Conference. AWC is not endorsing any candidate, merely providing voting delegates with background information on each candidate. Since the pamphlet will be produced prior to the Annual Conference, only AWC Board candidates who submit their application prior to the June 2, 2008 deadline will be included. Interested candidates should complete and submit the attached Qualifications and Interest summary form.

If you have questions about applying for a Board position, contact Mike McCarty at 360-753-4137 or mikem@awcnet.org.

Eligibility

To be eligible to serve on the AWC Board of Directors, an individual must be an elected city official and, in the case of a district position, be from a city or town located within that district. At-Large Positions #2 and #4 are designated for elected officials from cities or towns under 5,000 population.

With the exception of the offices of president, vice president, and single city districts, the Nominating Committee is required to nominate two candidates for each position when the committee finds two candidates seeking such a position to be well qualified, willing, and able to perform the duties. As a reminder, Board members are required to be able to attend at least four day-long meetings each year. Travel the day before the meeting may be necessary.

Please note: Candidates will be sent campaign guidelines for the conference.

Responsibilties of the AWC Board of Directors

In addition to making policy decisions regarding AWC activities and programs, it is the responsibility of the Board of Directors to interpret and apply the Association's Statement of Policy to various issues that arise during the year. The Board also provides guidance to the AWC staff in the implementation of policies adopted by delegates during the annual business meeting.

Board members may also serve on the governing Boards of the:

  • AWC Employee Benefit Trust, a multi-employer health benefit trust providing employee benefit plans to cities and towns throughout the state.
  • AWC Risk Management Service Agency, a property and liability insurance pool program.
  • AWC Board Legislative Steering Committee, which meets regularly during the legislative session to review legislation and give AWC staff guidance on current legislative issues.

Officer and Board member criteria include:

  1. The individual must be an elected official and, except for the Board officer and at-large positions, be from a city or town within the given AWC Board district. See below for a map and listing of the AWC districts.
  2. The individual must be able to attend Board meetings, approximately four or five times a year, held throughout the state. Travel and related expenses incurred in conjunction with AWC Board of Directors meetings (except the meeting held in conjunction with the annual conference) are reimbursed by AWC.
