William O Douglas Community Service Project

One of Yakima’s most famous residents is US Supreme Court Justice William O Douglas. Stricken with polio, Chief Justice Douglas frequently walked a local trail to strengthen his legs.

The William O Douglas trail recognizes his contributions, both as a Supreme Court justice and as an avid environmentalist. The 75-mile recreational trail project goes through Yakima, Yakima County and into Lewis and Pierce Counties, connecting to Mount Rainier National Park.

As part of a special community service project, you can help with the restoration of a wooden walkway on the trail. You’ll work alongside city and AWC staff. One of Yakima’s historic trolleys will take you to the work site, two miles from the Convention Center.

Participants earn 1 credit towards the Community Service section of the Advanced CML.
