Congress weighing issues that impact Washington cities

AWC is closely watching the events in the other Washington as Congress faces a January 1 deadline to reach a deal or face sequestration (the “fiscal cliff”).

Last week, AWC President Don Gerend sent a letter to each member of Washington’s Congressional delegation urging them to carefully consider the impacts to local governments as part of any budget and deficit negotiations. One concern is discussion about capping or eliminating the tax-exempt status of municipal bonds. This would increase borrowing costs to cities at a time when needed infrastructure investments can help stimulate the economy.

What can you do?

If you have not weighed in with your Senators and Representative about retaining the tax-exempt status of municipal bonds, we ask that you do so as soon as possible. Discussions are taking place on the issue right now.

We will continue to provide updates through our Legislative Bulletin and CityVoice. The National League of Cities has also developed a resource page with sample letters to Congress, newspaper articles, and other information. And as always, feel free to contact AWC’s Dave Williams or Serena Dolly.
