Stakeholders Continue to Discuss Voting Rights in Washington State

Shortly after a federal court ruled that the City of Yakima’s system for electing councilmembers violates the federal Voting Rights Act, a state legislator convened stakeholders to discuss an evolving legislative proposal for a Washington Voting Rights Act. A new version is likely to be introduced in the 2015 legislative session. Although the proposal has been amended over the past two years, local government representatives continue to express concern about the potential for unnecessary litigation that may not correct any perceived problems in local election systems. AWC will continue to engage with legislators and stakeholders. More information regarding the Yakima case can be found here.
