AWC fondly remembers Rich Munson

Rich Munson, former Spokane Valley Mayor and AWC Board President, passed away last Saturday.

AWC Board President Kathy Turner shared these sentiments about Rich, “Rich was an incredible asset to AWC serving on the board and as our president. He brought a wealth of knowledge, energy and commitment to our board and organization. He was an advocate for cities and a great colleague and friend. He will be truly missed.”

Tom Towey, Mayor of Spokane Valley shared with AWC a little of Rich’s history. “One of Spokane Valley’s “original seven” councilmembers, Rich served on the council from the city’s incorporation in 2003 through 2009, including a term as mayor from 2008 through 2009. He was truly a visionary who was passionate about the city and the people he served.

During his tenure on the council, Rich and his fellow councilmembers ushered the city through many firsts, including:

  • Development of the Council Governance Manual establishing the manner in which Council conducts the business of the city.
  • Adoption of the first Comprehensive Plan guiding future development.
  • Construction of CenterPlace Regional Event Center.
  • Obtaining funding for Discovery Playground.
  • Acquisition of land for a new park in Greenacres.
  • Renovation of the city’s three 30-year old pools.
  • Construction of the new Barker Road Bridge.
  • Declarations of emergency during the ValleyView Fire of 2008 and record breaking snows during the winter of 2008-2009.

He was an active member of our community, volunteering and serving on the boards for numerous community organizations. His passing leaves a hole in our community, one not easily filled. He will be greatly missed.”

The service will be held on Saturday, January 8 at 10:30 am at CenterPlace Regional Event Center, 2426 N. Discovery Place in Spokane Valley.
