Association of Washington Cities elects new board members

City delegates elected AWC’s officers and board of directors during the members’ annual business meeting at the association’s annual conference in Spokane on June 23.

Councilmember Nancy McLaughlin, Spokane, was elected AWC president. She previously served as AWC’s vice president. “Integrity, a passion to serve, and common sense are the characteristics I value most in a leader. It is my honor to serve as your president,” said McLaughlin.

A 33-year Spokane resident, she’s served on the city council since 2005. She has spent five years on AWC’s board and currently serves as Chair of AWC’s State Long-Term Legislative Committee and serves on the Legislative and Education Advisory Committees.

Mayor Don Gerend, Sammamish, was elected vice president. A Sammamish resident since its incorporation, Gerend has participated in various ways on the AWC Legislative Committee, testifying at the Legislature, engaged in the Federal Legislative Committee and as an AWC appointed member to the National League of Cities Information Technology and Communications Steering Committee. He has also been chair of the AWC Audit Committee, participated in all of the Mayors Exchanges, and is the current chair of AWC’s Education Committee. He previously served as AWC secretary.

Mayor Craig George, Dayton, was elected secretary. George moved to Dayton in 2002 and was elected to city council in 2004. He joined AWC’s Small Cities Advisory Committee in 2006 and has served as co-chair since January 2010. He also currently serves on the AWC Education, Legislative and Resolutions Committees.

Also elected to the board at the business meeting were: Rockford Mayor Micki Harnois, Chelan Mayor Bob Goedde, Vancouver Councilmember Jeanne Harris, Kenmore Mayor David Baker, Renton Councilmember Rich Zwicker, Everett Councilmember Paul Roberts, Yarrow Point Mayor David Cooper, and Walla Walla Councilmember Jerry Cummins.

The other board of director positions are held by: Puyallup Mayor Kathy Turner (Immediate Past President, Pullman Mayor Glenn Johnson (Past President), Pasco Councilmember Rebecca Francik, Grandview Mayor Norm Childress, Eatonville Councilmember James Valentine, Mukilteo Mayor Joe Marine, Spokane Mayor Mary Verner, Tacoma Councilmember Jake Fey, Seattle Councilmember Jean Godden, Seattle Councilmember Tom Rasmussen, Poulsbo Councilmember Ed Stern, Mountlake Terrace City Manager  John Caulfield, and Pullman City Supervisor John Sherman.

AWC is s private, non-profit corporation serving Washington’s 281 towns and cities. AWC provides cities and towns with legislative representation, education and training, technical assistance and a variety of member services including insurance. Membership is voluntary and AWC maintains 100% participation from Washington’s cities and towns.
