Clark County mayors host legislative candidate forum

Washougal Mayor and AWC board member Sean Guard spearheaded an effort by all of the mayors in Clark County to ask legislative candidates to answer questions specifically of interest to cities. In addition to Mayor Guard, the mayors of Battleground, Ridgefield, Vancouver, Yacolt, Camas, and La Center participated, and the mayor of Woodland helped organize the effort. The mayors invited all candidates for State House and State Senate from the legislative districts in Clark County, and had an impressive twelve candidates attend the forum. Clark County Community television covered the forum and broadcast it to their viewers.

This forum was a great example of AWC’s Strong Cities, Great State initiative. By organizing the forum, these mayors ensured that the candidates answered questions on important city issues. Throughout the course of the evening, the mayors took turns asking about topics such as public records, shared revenues, the law enforcement academy, public works assistance, binding interest arbitration, MRSC funding, and the 1% property tax cap. In addition to answering questions on the issues, candidates were asked to commit to signing letters of support on a number of issues and had an opportunity to provide a brief opening and closing statement.

Watch a video of the forum here, and we encourage city officials who are interested in replicating this effort to consider whether something like this would be of interest to your community as well.
