Premera Breach

On March 17, 2015 Premera announced that a cyber-attack resulted in unauthorized access to Premera’s IT system. While the Regence/Asuris IT system was not breached, some of their members have been affected. That's because each independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association participates in a program called BlueCard® that allows members to receive in-network benefits when seeking medical care in another Blue plan's service area.  A doctor or hospital could have submitted personal information to Premera to receive payment if a Regence member received care in a service area where Premera operates (Alaska and Washington). The affected protected health information of current and former Premera members scans 2002-2015.

Premera began sending official notification to affected Regence/Asuris members on April 20. Some of your employees may be a former Premera member and have already received notification from Premera. If this is the case, they will not receive a second notification. To prepare employees for the Premera letter, Regence sent an advance notice to those impacted. Sample Regence letter.
