2014: A wellness year in review

2014 was a year marked by many changes, program enhancements and continued enthusiastic engagement by Trust members.

Highlights

  • Self-insurance resulted in termination for some members while attracting many new members
  • A new, improved Health Questionnaire (HQ) was unveiled
  • Health Central rolled out new apps, enhanced mobile capabilities, text reminders and Fitbit integration
  • Completed first full coaching year without an incentive
  • New members are enthusiastic about wellness and eager to meet the WellCity requirements

Member engagement

AWC Trust members continue to show a strong commitment to employee health, with the number of WellCities growing from 84 in 2013 to 96 in 2014. More than 75% of the insured population now work at WellCities.

Attendance at wellness training events remains high with the Healthy Worksite Summit and the wellness webinar series reaching the largest number of employers. One hundred fifteen member employers participated in one or more of the Trust’s wellness trainings last year.

Our HQ completion rate continues to rise, despite the influx of new members, reaching a new all-time high of 53% statewide! A record 146 members reached the 50% goal. Members continue to raise the HQ bar for themselves each year. We also saw an increase in mini-grant usage in 2014, perhaps driven by the Double Your Mini-Grant promotion offered for members that reached 50% HQ completion by the end of August.

New engagement tools include apps like Daily Victory and Weigh Today that are integrated with the Health Central site. In addition, Fitbit wearable devices can be set up to sync with your Health Central account.

While 73% of the eligible population has created a Health Central account, the site visit rate remains low at 1-2 visits per member. Members engaged in coaching are using the My Health Assistant and text messaging features at a higher rate than other members.

Health coaching engagement rates dropped significantly when the financial incentive for coaching was discontinued. The high risk group dropped from 49% to 20% and the moderate risk group went from 49% to 28%. Those that did engage in coaching reported high satisfaction scores. 7% of those eligible for weight management coaching engaged in the program, with 61% reporting weight loss.

The Employee Assistance Program continues to be a trusted resource for employers, employees, and family members. Overall 2014 Trust-wide utilization was at 24% – which breaks down to 6% live access (calling the EAP); 15% online access; and 3% other (includes training and onsite Critical Incident Stress Debriefings).

Top presenting issues Trust-wide when calling the EAP continue to be partner/relationship, psychological and family. Employers with over 50 employees were sent a letter with their average utilization information.

The EAP 1-3 session model is now included with all Trust plans so we expect to see continued high usage. ComPsych attributes our high usage to the excellent job you all do in communicating the program. Additional EAP resources can be found on our website or ordered from a-team@awcnet.org.

Health risk and behavior change profile

While the AWC Trust population is 3 years older than the WebMD Book of Business, we also have higher rates of health risk in 10 of 12 categories and higher rates of chronic conditions in 4 of 5 categories. As a group, our most prevalent health risks are weight, blood pressure and diet. Members from WellCities utilize wellness resources at a higher rate and show lower rates of health risk.

The 7-year HQ cohort group* saw improvements in alcohol, blood sugar and stress levels, their risks increased in blood pressure, cholesterol and weight. This group also had a 7% higher preventive screening compliance rate than the current year population as a whole.

The 7-year coaching cohort group* saw an 8.8% increase in readiness to change and made improvements in emotional health, blood sugar and stress. Like the HQ cohort, they saw increases in risk for blood pressure, cholesterol and weight. It’s important to note that the cohort groups aged 7 years during the period.

Additional detail about the Trust’s statewide risk profile can be found in the HQ Management Report on our website. All members with 50 or HQ completions in 2014 receive a detailed HQ Management Report on their population. This report is a valuable tool for program planning and evaluation. Management Reports are uploaded to each member’s eWellCity account. Access to eWellCity is limited so check with your wellness coordinator for a copy.
