Update on legislation impacting local business licensing and B&O taxes

Maintaining expanded uses of lodging taxes

This AWC priority bill maintains the current uses for local hotel-motel, or lodging, tax revenue. In 2007, the Legislature granted the following new uses:

  • Funding the operation of special events and/or festivals designed to attract tourists (as opposed to “marketing”); and
  • Funding the operations and capital expenditures of tourism-related facilities owned by non-profit organizations.

A recent news article included information regarding several pending and recently decided court cases around the country regarding the tax exemption of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae from real estate excise and other taxes, and conflicting conclusions regarding their exempt status.

Cities and counties recommend flexibility in local revenue

At the most recent meeting of the Joint Select Committee on Junior Taxing Districts, Municipal Corporations, and Local Government Finance, cities and counties recommended restoration of liquor revenue and flexibility in local lodging taxes and the Real Estate Excise Tax (REET).

Congress weighing issues that impact Washington cities
