Governor’s toxics reduction bill up in the Senate on Tuesday

Governor Inslee’s bill to address non-point pollution via stronger tools to reduce exposure to toxic chemicals will be heard in the Senate Energy and Environment Committee on Tuesday, March 24, at 1:30 pm.

As the bill passed the House earlier this month, a controversial provision to provide authority to the Department of Ecology to ban the use of certain toxic chemicals after an evaluative process was removed. The two most controversial elements that remain are the universe of chemicals that this new approach would consider evaluating and authority proposed for the Department of Ecology to be able to require businesses to undertake an alternatives assessment for the use of chemicals that are found to pose a health risk. AWC will be supporting this bill and continues to work with all sides to help find a compromise that can move a substantive but balanced bill forward.
