AWC Federal Action Alert on Marketplace Fairness

After 10 years of work by state and local leaders, the Marketplace Fairness Act passed the U.S. Senate with bipartisan support earlier this year. As the 113th Congress comes to a close, now is the time for the U.S. House of Representatives to consider and pass this much-needed legislation.

Please contact your Representative as soon as possible and urge support for the immediate passage of Marketplace Fairness. Remind your Representative that businesses and local governments in Washington state need Marketplace Fairness which has the support of Washington state, county, and city business leaders.

Marketplace Fairness:

  • Levels the playing field between brick and mortar retailers who are required to collect sales tax, and online retailers who are not.
  • Does not create a new tax or increase an existing one. It simply allows states and local governments to enforce existing sales tax laws and simplifies the manner citizens pay the sales and use tax.
  • Provides Washington state and local governments with important revenue to support education, public safety, and other essential services: An estimated $650 million in local sales tax and nearly $1.3 billion in state sales tax over the next five years.

Check out an estimate of the additional sales tax monies your community could expect to receive in the 2015-17 Biennium.

Contact information for each Representative is available here.

Please contact AWC’s Dave Williams if you have any questions or need additional information.
