AWC reiterates city federal priorities in DC

Last week, CEO Mike McCarty participated in the National League of Cities (NLC) Board Meeting. While in Washington, DC, he met with the staff of Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell to reiterate city support for the Marketplace Fairness Act and express concerns about any efforts to limit the tax-exempt status of municipal bonds.

Despite a strong push by advocates to allow states and local governments to require out-of-state sellers to collect sales tax, the Marketplace Fairness Act did not come up for a vote of the full U.S. Senate last term. However, Congress also made no changes to the tax-exempt status of municipal bonds as some had feared they might.

These two city priorities are expected to be considered by the new Congress, and AWC will work with NLC to ensure the Washington city position is heard. Look for updates in future Legislative Bulletins.
