Ecology Releases Preliminary Report on Marine and Rail Oil Transportation

Last year’s state budget provided one-time funding for Ecology to conduct a Marine and Rail Oil Transportation Study in cooperation with the Utilities and Transportation Commission, Emergency Management Division, and other agencies. The objective of the study is to analyze the risks to public health and safety, environmental impacts associated with the transport of oil in Washington state, and make recommendations to address those risks.

Ecology released the Preliminary Findings and Recommendations on October 1, and held public meetings to address comments. The goal is to produce an interim report for the Governor and the Legislature by December 1, with the final report due by March 1. To download this preliminary report, view the schedule for public meetings, and provide comments, go to the study webpage here.

AWC staff and the AWC Freight Rail Advisory Committee have met with state agency staff working on these preliminary recommendations and were pleased to see that many of the concerns we have raised are included in the report. We will continue to provide feedback as the study moves forward.
