EPA Extends Comment Period on Waters of the U.S. Definition

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 10 is seeking your input on the proposed changes to the Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) definition under the Clean Water Act. We wanted to let you know that the public comment period for the WOTUS proposed rule has been extended and will now close on Friday, November 14, 2014.

Changes to WOTUS will affect local government, and we wanted to be sure that you have the information you need to provide feedback. You can submit comments through the Federal e-Rulemaking portal or via email:

  • Federal e-Rulemaking Portal: Follow the instructions for submitting comments. The proposed rule’s Docket ID No. is EPA-HQ-OW-2011-0880.

  • Email: Send your comments to ow-docket@epa.gov. Include EPA-HQ-OW-2011-0880 in the subject line of the message.

To learn more about the proposed changes to the WOTUS definition, please see the WOTUS website. You can also access the background information packet here which provides:

  • An overview of the process that the EPA and the Army Corps are following in this rulemaking;
  • A summary of the proposed regulatory changes; and
  • Questions to consider when commenting in the federal docket.

Your input will help us ensure that we have a strong, achievable final WOTUS rule. The EPA and the Corps will give careful consideration to all comments and aim to publish a final rule in spring 2015. If you have any questions, please contact Michael J. Szerlog, Manager of the Aquatic Resource Unit at the Environmental Protection Agency: szerlog.michael@epa.gov and (206) 553-0279.
