AWC joins with local governments and associations to comment on proposed FCC wireless facilities rules

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently proposed rules detailing requirements for local approval of wireless communication facilities. AWC joined with the Colorado Communications and Utility Alliance, the Rainier Communications Commission, the cities of Seattle and Tacoma, King County, Washington and the Colorado Municipal League to express concern with the rules as proposed.

We noted that local governments support and promote the deployment of broadband networks and that the regulation of wireless facility siting and construction, and the process for deploying wireless networks works well already. As such we urged the FCC to expand formal guidance and education rather than adopting formal rules. If the FCC continues to pursue formal rules we urged them to avoid creating definitions that would lead to broad preemptory limits on traditional areas of state and local control.
