HB 2601 would alter cities ability to change municipal court structure

HB 2601 would prohibit cities from changing their municipal court terms until the end of the judges’ term of office. The effect would be prohibiting cities from changing court providers until the judges’ term expired. So a city that had operated a municipal court and now wanted to contract with a District Court could not make that change until the current judge’s term expired. AWC opposes this restriction on local flexibility. Cities must maintain their ability to decide the best and most effective way to provide court services without unnecessary restrictions.

HB 2601 will have a public hearing in the House Judiciary Committee February 4 at 1:30pm. We need cities to contact the members of this Committee and urge them not to advance this unnecessary bill.
