Update on tribal property tax exemption bills

Yesterday, the House version of a bill exempting all tribally-owned property used for economic development from property tax, HB 1287, was voted out of the House Community Development, Housing & Tribal Affairs Committee. The bill is likely to move next to the House Finance Committee for consideration.

Meanwhile, a new Senate version, SB 6162, has been introduced and is scheduled to be heard in the Senate Governmental Operations Committee on Tuesday, January 28. The new Senate version mirrors the latest House amendments.

AWC will continue to express concerns about the bill’s broad definitions and potential impacts.
