Dog breed-specific ordinances prohibited under new bill

Some Washington cities have enacted ordinances that place additional restrictions on specific breeds of dogs. Rep. Appleton (D-Poulsbo) introduced HB 2117 prohibiting jurisdictions from calling out a specific breed of dog when crafting such ordinances. The bill adds without regard to the breed of the dog to many definitions already in statute including potentially dangerous dog and dangerous dog. The bill would instead focus on an animal’s behavior.

HB 2117 is scheduled for a hearing in the House Judiciary Committee, January 16 at 8am.
