Expanding tribal property tax exemption

Next week, the House Community Development, Housing & Tribal Affairs Committee will hear HB 1287, which extends the tribal property tax exemption to all tribal economic development purposes. The bill also extends the leasehold excise tax to property owned by tribes. Last session, AWC opposed the House version of the bill due to the overbroad exemption of economic development and its potential impacts on cities, and the Senate passed a much narrower bill that limited the exemption. Ultimately, the two chambers did not agree, and no bill was enacted.
