2013 Legislative Sessions wrap just in time to start work for 2014

If it seems like the Fourth of July is upon us and we just finished the 2013 session, that’s because we did. The double overtime session officially ended on Saturday with some direct budget hits to cities in reduced liquor tax revenue and and a partial sweep of the Public Works Trust Fund. In spite of the disappointing impacts of the budget, we also celebrated some successes during the session like preserving lodging tax flexibility, modifying the costly fleet conversion mandate and securing $100 million to help cities address stormwater challenges and opportunities.

With just six months before the start of the next legislative session, AWC is already turning our focus to 2014. We will be working over the next several months to meet with legislators to talk about the issues cities care about and the impacts of the budget. We encourage you to use the interim to meet with your legislators and tell them about the local impacts of the legislature's actions.

We are also starting to update the AWC Legislative Agenda for 2014. The Legislative Committee will begin working in August and continue through the fall to review and update our legislative agenda.

Now is the time for you to share your cities’ ideas and suggestions for new issues. We are looking for ideas that your city has had on your own legislative agenda as well as cost savings and fiscal flexibility proposals that may not have been included on the 2013 AWC Legislative Agenda. We need your suggestions and early next week will send an official invitation to share your ideas so that they can be considered by the Legislative Committee and subcommittees during their meetings in August and September. In the invitation, we’ll ask that either mayors, councilmembers or city managers convey your collective suggestions to Dave Williams by Thursday, July 26. We look forward to hearing from you.
