Mandating city use of the states Business Licensing Service

AWC and cities will again testify in opposition to SB 5656, which mandates that all cities issuing business licenses convert to the state’s Business Licensing Service (BLS). More than 200 cities currently issue business licenses, and only about half voluntarily use BLS. At our recent City Legislative Action Conference, we again heard concerns about this proposal, which include cities having invested in their own licensing systems, the lack of flexibility in the state system, and reducing city ability to respond to the needs of their business communities.

The bill passed the Senate Trade & Economic Development Committee and will be heard in Senate Ways & Means on Tuesday, February 26. We urge cities with business licenses to express concerns and opposition to committee members.
