Medical marijuana arrest protection bill advances in Senate

On February 21, the Senate Health Care Committee advanced SB 5528, which makes technical changes to existing medical marijuana laws and establishes arrest protection for qualified medical marijuana patients. A similar provision was originally vetoed in 2011 by then-Governor Gregoire in the legislation that authorized collective gardens. At the hearing, law enforcement expressed concern about establishing arrest protection without a corresponding patient registry for law enforcement to use to verify legitimate medical marijuana patients. The final version that passed included no provisions for patient registry.
