Resources for LEOFF 1 Disability Boards

Cities, counties and other governmental jurisdictions are responsible for the lifetime medical costs of their LEOFF 1 employees and retirees. For many years, these local governments have struggled with how to ensure LEOFF 1 participants receive necessary medical care while keeping costs sustainable. Some healthcare expenses approved by disability boards haven’t always been tied to medical necessity, and often there are other reasonable options for care than those imposed by the boards.

As part of AWC’s ongoing effort to help public employers manage their liability for LEOFF 1 medical costs, we have begun offering training to LEOFF 1 board members, board secretaries, and anyone involved with LEOFF 1 medical responsibilities and costs. The LEOFF 1 Disability Board Best Practices Resource Guide is a key component of this year’s training. The resource guide outlines key responsibilities, guidance, statutory requirements and provides sample policies to help navigate this complex issue.

The LEOFF 1 Disability Board Best Practices Resource Guide was developed by W. Scott Snyder of Ogden Murphy Wallace on behalf of AWC and is available here.

AWC plans to offer additional training related to LEOFF I medical costs in 2017.
