Requiring crisis intervention training for law enforcement

A bill recently introduced would require crisis intervention training for law enforcement in order to respond more effectively to emotional, mental, and behavioral related crises. Every new, full-time law enforcement officer hired after July 1, 2015, would be required to have no less than 40 hours of crisis intervention training as part of the academy curriculum. After that, the officer must have 8 hours of training annually. This requirement is likely to have a fiscal impact.

SB 5532 and its companion HB 1559 have not yet been scheduled for a hearing.
