Binding mediation bill dies

SB 6645, Sen. Pam Roach (R-Auburn), failed to make the February 17 cutoff deadline and is considered dead.

SB 6645 would have required cities, towns or counties to enter into mediation if another city, town or county brought forward a request for mediation. Under the legislation, when a city, town or county had a conflict with another city, town or county, they could request the names of three mediators from the Attorney General’s Office. All parties would then have had to choose from the pool of mediators, unless both parties agreed to use another mediator. The decision by the mediator would have been binding.

AWC expressed concerns with the legislation.
