Police body-worn camera bill still has a chance

HB 2362 sponsored by Rep. Drew Hansen (D-Bainbridge Island) still has a chance to pass the House despite missing the cutoff on February 17. Rep. Hansen has been working with numerous stakeholders to fine-tune the bill to address a variety of issues. The bill needed some additional time and House leaders have granted a few more days to work on amendments. The bill may be voted on by the House as early as Monday, and then be scheduled for a hearing in the Senate Law & Justice Committee later in the week, possibly Wednesday.

AWC strongly supports this bill as an important first step in granting greater privacy protections and more clarity about how the video recordings will be treated under the Public Records Act. If your city is using body-worn cameras or is considering implementing them in the near future, please contact your legislator and urge them to support the bill.
