Bill limiting city authority to ban marijuana businesses could be voted on

HB 1438 would limit cities’ ability to prohibit the retail sale of marijuana in their communities by requiring any such prohibition to only be enacted by a public vote. Currently city councils have the authority to place bans or moratoriums on such activities.

AWC and the Washington State Association of Counties staff testified in opposition to the bill when it was heard in the House Commerce & Gaming Committee. However, the bill advanced out of its policy committee and now has been made eligible for a vote of the full House.

It is important for cities to contact your local Representatives and express your opposition to this bill to keep it from passing the House.
