Bill concerning emergency management notices in other languages on the move, AWC working on amendments

SB 6530, sponsored by Sen. Bob Hasegawa (D-Beacon Hill), would require local emergency management departments in communities where at least five percent of the population speaks a language other than English to provide written and verbal notices of public health, safety, or welfare risks in the languages represented in the community.

AWC does have some concerns around the feasibility of this during times of severe crisis and is working with the sponsor about possible amendments to the bill. Specifically, how our cities and emergency management agencies can work in advance of a crisis to ensure the needs of all communities are met.

SB 6530 was pulled to the Senate floor from the Rules Committee on February 8 where it is awaiting action by the Senate.
