Expanding participation in the Washington state deferred compensation program

During the 2015 legislative session, the Senate considered a proposal, SB 5435, to require all cities and counties participating in the state retirement systems to offer the state’s deferred compensation program. AWC opposed the bill as an unnecessary mandate that interfered with current city contracts.

On Friday, February 5, the Senate unanimously passed a substitute version of the bill. The substitute does not mandate city participation in the state’s deferred compensation program but emphasizes that cities and counties have the option to offer the program. Cities that offer the state’s deferred compensation program will have the ability to automatically enroll employees unless that employee opts out of the program. AWC hasn’t taken a position on the substitute version of the bill.
