Bill would require public health, safety and welfare notices to be provided in languages represented in community

SB 6530, Sen. Bob Hasegawa (D-Beacon Hill), would require local emergency management departments in communities where at least five percent of the population speaks a language other than English to provide written and verbal notices of public health, safety, or welfare risks in the languages represented in the community. The bill also calls for the departments to maintain updated demographic data and information on the languages represented in their communities.

The bill received a public hearing in the Senate Government Operations Committee on February 2 and was given a “do pass” recommendation. It has been passed to the Rules Committee.
