Bill introduced authorizing local governments to use electronic signatures

HB 2427, sponsored by Rep. Larry Springer (D-Kirkland), would authorize local governments to utilize electronic signatures in lieu of written signatures. Currently, there are differing opinions over whether cities have this authority. AWC is supportive of this legislation.

Under HB 2427, whenever the use of a written signature is authorized or required, an electronic signature may be used with the same force and effect as the use of a signature affixed by hand. As technology has changed and many day-to-day interactions in government take place electronically, this becomes an important tool for cities.

HB 2427 is scheduled for public hearing on January 19 in the House Local Government Committee at 10 am. It is scheduled for executive session the following day.
