Do you have suggestions for the next round of legislative priorities? Fill out this survey

Legislators may be back home trying to figure out K-12 school funding, but there are other important issues that need their attention when they convene for their 2016 Legislative Session on January 11. Most city legislative priorities were addressed in 2015 – including maintaining and restoring shared revenues, enacting a statewide transportation package, and sharing new marijuana tax revenues in a better blended recreational and medical regulatory system that honors local control – but not all city priorities were met. AWC and city officials will continue to press for a recommitment to infrastructure funding and consider ways to ensure more sustainable revenues for communities of all sizes and locations.

As we move forward, we want to hear from you. We’re interested to know what other priorities the leaders of our 281 cities and towns would like us to address this next session.

If your city has an issue you think needs to be addressed during the 2016 session, please fill out this brief survey and return it by September 14. We ask that it be submitted on behalf of at least one elected official.

Our Legislative Committee is meeting on September 21 at Sea-Tac Airport to discuss issues left over from 2015 and what is best addressed in the short 60-day 2016 session. For example, given this summer’s drought and massive wildfires, we expect to add something that grants cities greater authority to ban fireworks. The committee will advance recommendations to our AWC Board which will adopt next year’s priorities on October 2.

Your help and ideas are needed! If you have any questions about this process or about the survey, please contact AWC’s Director of Government Relations, Dave Williams.
