Voting Rights Act fails to make the Governor’s desk

Since 2012, the Legislature has grappled with a proposal to create a Washington Voting Rights Act. Proponents, stakeholders, legislators, and representatives from the Governor’s office met before session to try and iron out some of the sticking points. As a result, new bills were proposed this session, HB 1745/SB 5668, which differed in a number of ways from earlier versions.

While the Legislature ultimately did not pass this bill, debates continue between the two chambers and among the caucuses. AWC has taken a neutral position on this legislation, acknowledging that cities have varying opinions about the proposal. We expect the discussion to continue during interim and the 2016 legislative session.
